As many would now know, Google has begun to cut back on it's costs as the financial crisis hits home, and instead appears to be investing in more in house projects instead of purchasing all ready setup businesses and bringing them under the 'Google Wing'. It also appears the same thing is happening for Google Ads.
After attempting for almost 2 years to try and sell newspaper advert slots, Google has given up and has announced the closure of the program, ending on Feb. 28th. This will affect many newspapers in the US who relied heavily on Google's services to sell advert space, and is just another blow to the print industry.
In the meantime, and without very little official notification, Google have begun slipping in paid adverts in image searches. Searching for things in the image search such as "Search Marketing"or even ironically enough "ads" shows three AdSense ads along the top of the page - an expansion which won't cost Google anywhere near as much to manage as the Newspaper ads.
So with ads now appearing in image searches, is any Google service going to remain ad-free? My tip - probably not. In this time when companies need to continue to make as much profit to stay afloat as possible (not that Google is in any dire problems at the moment) companies will look at expanding ways of making money in house and at a low cost - so for Google this means placing adverts in as many spots as possible.
